I always check with a smartphone and an application like Google Maps or Waze. The time across the LA basin can be different depending upon accidents and traffic conditions. I find the biggest variable in timing coming back from Las Vegas is the last part, from Victorville across the LA basin to LAX. You would not do the longer route because you wanted to avoid traffic. You can detour through the Joshua Tree forest, go across a dry lake bed, through Joshua Tree National Park and then go past Palm Springs and the windmills. There are several options on the longer route. The drive back to LA from Las Vegas via Palm Springs is interesting but much longer, four and a half hours of driving for the direct route back to LA vs 8 to 9 hours of just driving for the route through Palm Springs.
